oracle not available. [message #179551]

When I have installed oracle 8i, sql plus was working fine but after restart of PC it is giving error: oracle not found. i have tried the following solution, but problem persists.

OS> sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect sys/its_password@database
SQL> startup

please suggest me some solution to this problem.
note : OS is win xp prof.

Could you post the screenshot after executing these commands? Obviously, there were some problems during startup, but which ones?

[EDIT] By the way, why are you starting a new thread? What's wrong with the old one?
