Unless you have a specific need to, you shouldn't be installing 9iR2, but instead 10gR1 or 10gR2.

Also, when you say memory, do you mean RAM memory or disk memory? The init.ora parameters control how much RAM you database instance will use when it is running.

I have core duo 2Ghz,with 2GHz ram and 100 GB disk. My computer is saying i have less memory disk i.e hard disk.
About 10g& 9i, my friend says that i have to install 9i. so please explore this issue because i am learner and you guys are Gurus.

And now I reinstall my system from all the cds which came with it and still it has 95 GB is free, so I am afraid if i install the database again then it will eat up 95GB, but i wanna database on my laptop for practice. can somebody help me to put it to my system.

Thanks for sharing your views.
Thanks

If you started with 100 gig free, installed oracle, and how have 95 gig free, then it means oracle only took up 5 gig, and you have plenty of space left. Maybe I'm not understanding, but I don't see this as a problem.

Also, unless your environment requires 9i, meaning you have a specific app from a vendor or someone that is only certified on 9i, then run 10g instead because it is newer, less bugs, and easier to install and to manage.

As you've said that you need Oracle for practice, perhaps you will be interested in installing Oracle XE instead.

That should not be a problem. I have installed Oracle 9i on my old PC that had only a couple of GB (3 or 4) left on the disk. But for private purposes I would use Oracle 10g XE as suggested before.

Oracle XE ia a database. Nothing more and nothing less. You can connect to it through SQL*Plus, Developer Suite, Crystal Reports, Delphi ... whatever. These are just tools to help you manipulate with data stored in the database.

If you insist on having HR schema in your XE DB (I don't know is it installed during XE installation process), no problem - just import it into the newly created HR user, or check this document to see how to create it manually.

I see only two of them:

- Oracle Database 10g Express Edition for Linux x86
(Available for Debian, Mandriva, Novell, Red Hat and Ubuntu)

- Oracle Database 10g Express Edition for Microsoft Windows

Seeing that you own a laptop having xp proff, I believe you'll be interested in the MS Windows version.

FYI: My XE here takes 1.1GB. The download size is just over 160M so you should be fine when it comes to disk space. Now, as for your question. You probably mean that there are 3 windows downloads available:
1. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Western European)
2. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Universal)
3. Oracle Database 10g Express Client: as it says in the accompanying: "to be installed on client systems for remotely accessing Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. You do not need to install the client onto the same computer as Oracle Database 10g Express Edition."

You have 2 options left: you install the version with the interface in English only and with the single byte character set. But if you want to use a multibyte character set (like Japanese) or if you want the interface to be in French or Brazilian, you take the universal version. They are functionally the same, the second one however has some extra language support features.
