question is not clear.

what is the operating system on which oracle 7 is running? is it unix or windows?

if you are connecting to the server directly, you can allways access oracle.
if you are on a client machine , and the database is on a different server, then you need oracle client set up(tnsnames.ora)

Yes you can access it but wouldn't it be time to think about an upgrade? After 7.3 we had already Oracle 8,8i, 9iR1, 9iR2, 10gR1 and now Oracle has put 10gR2 to production.

You need to configure your tnsnames.ora file.

The steps are:

click on:start->program->oracle-orahome92(or some other)->configuration and migration tool->Net configuration assistant.

once this net config assistant window comes, choose Local Net Service Name Configuration (3rd radio button),click next.
Click on the "Add" button, click next,
Click on the "Oracle 8i or later" and click next,
Enter the name of the database in the next text box, click next,
select TCP,click next,
give host name of linux server(or -if not available then its ip address)
click on yes, perform test..and it should succeed. if it does not, try to change the login and check username and password.

this all is related to configuring your tnsnames.ora file.

post back , if u get errors..
also, make sure that you are able to ping to your unix server (which has the database installed), from your pc(which has windows)
