The follwing has worked on winME so try it.
What you need to is;
Find win.ini and add or replace the follwoing;
[[Compatability95]]
Jrew=0x00080000
save the file and start installing Oracle.
Good luck
robert

thanks m8, I got it workng now! the only inconvenience is i have to start the oracle services manually once the OS has loaded. This is only a minor problem though because i'm a student and as such only use oracle if i really have to! now to install forms *gulp*...

thanks again
andy

I was excited when I read this link, and it looks like Andy did get a solution to his installation of Oracle 8i 8.1.5 on an XP system, however, the solution did not show up in this thread. I am seeking to do the exact same thing, get oracle 8i 8.1.5 on my WindowsXP system. Someone PLEASE share the work-around necessary to get it on XP. I had it on Win2000 a year ago and need it desperately on XP.

Thanks greatly!

Paul

to get round the problem I chose to install the windows NT version of oracle 8i (same release version) and this worked fine.
The installation process is basically the same except you have to specify a host string to log onto via sql etc. .(i chose per8i but you can call it anything really).

there are now only 2 problems to overcome..
1st problem..
if you are not on a network you must fool oracle to believe that you are (or buy a network card), i think this is answered elsewhere on the forum, let me know if it isn't and i'll email you a copy i have at uni.

second problem...
if after installing oracle you run sql (or whatever) without rebooting it will run fine (make sure you note down all usernames and passwords given during install). However if you then reboot you will find you can not logon to oracle any more. I found that this was because of the dependencies involved with the oracle services meanong that they have to be started manually rather than automatically. So..

got to control Panel --> Admin' tools --> Services and then find and run in this order:

OracleOraHome81Agent
" DataGatherer
" TNSListener
" PER8I (or what ever u named it)
OracleWebAssistant0
OracleOraHome81ClientCache

running the services in this order will ensure the dependencies are satisfied. It is a pain to have to do this every time you want to use Oracle after a reboot but it is better than nothing i guess. I just hope you can get a copy of the NT version.

let me know how you get on,
regards,
Andy

It seems like I can't load the Universal Installer at all (Oracle8i on WindowsXP). I've tried everything. When I click on "install/deinstall products" nothing happens.
It works fine on Windows2000. Any ideas?
Thanks.

the only thing that i can think of off-hand is that you are trying to install the windows 98 version and not the NT version. I experienced the same thing when I tried to install the windows 98 version and so switched to the NT edition which works okay after some (okay a lot of) tweeking.

Are you using A P4 processor. There's a known bug: Oracle installer 8.1.x hangs on machines with a Pentium 4 Processor. (Fixed in Oracle 9i). Obtain patch number 1507768 from Metalink or copy the entire CD to the hard drive and rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old. For more information, please refer to the following note [[NOTE:131299.1]] .

Guys,
We ought to exploit XP for the Gui xperience...I think having two partitions on for 98/NT for Oracle and other Database could help this problem to a broader extent.
XP is the best at its GUI apps.
Well i have doing this lately.

I found the solution for it

Workaround 1:
1. Create a temporary directory on your server.

2. Copy the entire contents of the Oracle RDBMS Server CD to the temporary directory created in step 1.

3. Search the directory structure created in Step 1 for the existence of the filename symcjit.dll.

4. Rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old.

5. Run the setup.exe from the installwin32 directory and install Oracle 8.1.x and related products.

Workaround 2:
If you continue to experience any of the symptoms after performing the workaround above,
follow these steps:

1. Copy the contents of the install directory to a temporary directory onto your hard disk.

2. Search for all copies of the 'symcjit.dll' file, and rename them to 'symcjit.old'.

3. Go to the install directory and open the 'oraparam.ini' file for editing. Please note this file is write-protected.

4. Change the JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS parameter to

JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m

I had the same problem with 8.1.7 and it is a known issue with installing on a machine that has a P4 processor. I assume that this is probably your issue. Try searching for oracle install on a p4 and you will probably find the work-arond.

Good Luck.
